Why?
The internet is unquestionably the most significant technological advance in centuries, and Gibson was the visionary author who predicted a worldwide communications network back in the '80s. He even came up with the term 'cyberspace'. The founder of the cyberpunk subgenre, he also helped popularise steampunk with The Difference Engine, co-written with Bruce Sterling.
