If you hadn't noticed we're kicking into Joss Whedon overdrive on SCI FI (have you taken the Joss Whedon quiz yet?) So what better time for our man Leigh (the man with the best avatar in the business) to deliver his verdict on the top Whedon characters spanning Buffy, Angel and Firefly.
5. Lorne - as played by Andy Hallett in Angel
The Host with the most, green Lorne was the ultimate lounge lizard - literally! Okay, so he wasn't literally a lizard, but he did look a bit like one, so cut me some slack, huh, buddy? Initially a guest star before gaining regular status in Season Four, the late, lamented Andy Hallett's empathic demon club owner was always a highlight of the episodes he appeared in, his saucy quips and outrageous dress sense adding some sorely needed razzle-dazzle to a show sometimes conspicuous in its dourness. Plus, he could have his head cut off and not die. Which is pretty cool, when you think about it.
4. Jayne Cobb - as played by Adam Baldwin in Firefly
One of Joss Whedon's talents is taking a hoary old archetype (bitchy cheerleader, stuffy librarian, etc) and, with the aid of his always impeccably chosen cast, fleshing them out into a fully realised character. So, with the character of Jayne Cobb - portrayed by Adam Baldwin (no relation) in his oats 'n' spaceships, Sci-Fi/Western hybrid Firefly - he takes on the lunk-headed, good ole boy and makes it his own. A strange hybrid of B.A. Baracus and Homer Simpson, Jayne's weasleish treachery is never dialled down (he betrays his compadres for money more than once) but care is taken to add textures to his persona and he remains strangely loveable, as demonstrated by his enthusiastic adoption of a ridiculous orange hat knitted for him by his mother, and the fact that, yes of course, he gives his favourite gun a nick-name (Vera, since you asked).
3. Winifred "Fred" Burkle - as played by Amy Acker in Angel
Characters of endearing naivety and sweetness are specialties of Whedon, who is able to use his often spiky dialogue to ensure such characteristics never descend into cutesy mawkishness. Notable examples of the Whedon ingenue are Buffy's Willow Rosenberg and Firefly's Kaylee Frye, but if you're going for maximum heartstring-tuggedness, Angel's Fred Burkle is your girl. From her first appearance as a slave human on the demon world Pylea, the show uses Acker's huge doe eyes and waifish frame to their full advantage, positioning her as the ultimate damsel in distress in her early years on the show, before evolving the character from wall-defacing basket-case to the team's resident science genius.
2. Buffy Summers - as played by Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
It asks a lot of a central character to carry a series for seven long seasons and it is to the credit of Whedon and co that they never stopped trying to push the titular character of BtVS into new and interesting areas, sometimes at the cost of Buffy's innate likeability. For as well as the trials and tribulations of fighting demons and vampires on a daily basis (as well as trying to live a semi-normal life as a hormonal teenager), Buffy also had to face up to the fact that she was both more capable and powerful than all around her, and so far removed from them as to almost have more in common with the ghouls and undead creatures she finds herself up against. The challenge of portraying this was one that Whedon's team never shied away from, with extended storylines following her relationships with vampires Angel and Spike, and the splintering of her "Scooby Gang" of friends and allies, showing that it wasn't all stakes and giggles for the "Barbie with a Kung Fu grip" that Whedon describes. The performance of Sarah Michelle Gellar should also never be underestimated, her flawless comic timing and dramatic (as well as Kung Fu) chops making sure that we always stay on her side.
1. Spike - as played by James Marsters in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel
Style by Billy Idol, spirit by Sid Vicious. Spike (or William the Bloody as he is also known) was originally intended as a short-lived antagonist to the eponymous vampire slayer, but the character was such a favourite of both the fans and writers of the show, that by the series' finale he had not only assumed the role of self-sacrificing "Champion" but he also became the only character to then cross over into sister show Angel. Smart (not to mention bloody) mouthed and itching for a fight, his antagonistic exterior hid a sensitive (lack of) soul, as evidenced by his relationship with fellow vamp Drusilla and flashbacks to his human life as a lovelorn poet. A gift to an ensemble cast, Marsters could play the Odd Couple with anyone, from on-off vamp gf Harmony (to whom Spike reluctantly plays "Blondie Bear") to evil genius turned irritating Scooby sidekick Andrew Wells. While Angel could do brooding to the nth degree, you'd just have to say that Spike made the coolest vampire since Christopher Lee, and you can't get higher compliment than that.

Angel is the best....no more said..
Difficult as there where so many good characters! I wouldnt put Spike first over Buffy though. No Buffy= no Spike in my opinion!
Replace Buffy with Captain Malcolm Reynolds and it's a good list.
Spike is the best character bar none.
i like this list <3spike<3 but there is a distinct lack of wesley- one of the most fantastic, in depth, detailed characters to ever be imagined! he should have been 2
hhmmm - and you've missed out a lot of Fab characters from 'Firefly' one of them being namely 'River' (Summer Glau) whom I love to bits -- so, it would have to be River, Spike, Fred and Capt Reynolds! (You should have had a Vote button on this!) :o) Lexa
I don't agree Faith was the best character out of the Whendonverse. This is my list:
I wish Wesley made this list. He was the embodiment of character development
5. Captain Hammer
angel himself, cordy, wesley, harmony, dru, darla, andrew... hell even buffy herself a couple times? for starters? these are all characters who also crossed over from buffy to angel, so whatever made you think that spike was the only one i just... don't understand.
I love the choice of Spike, however I do think Angel deserved a spot. He's the original vamp with a soul, the altruistic champion, the brooding and handsome hero, also the most sadistic vampire in recorded history. Also he is a completely different person without his soul. He taught William the Bloody how to be a vampire, and he then helped Spike understand the price of being a champion. Spike saw Angel like a big brother, of course theres alot more to it than that, but Spike and Angel a deep mutual respect for each other. Anyway all the spuffy and bangel fans be damned...
Yeahhhhh spike the best!!!!
SPIKE IS THE BEST!!! He made the both shows and he deserves to be # 1!!!
How the heck did they leave Angel Out? WTF is that?
WERE THE HELL IS ANGEL AND CORDELIA TWO OF THE GREATEST CHARACTERS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
of course no one else but spike is the best....the character who put series into life, from romance, comedy, action, everything.
i agree with spike being #1...and am SO glad angel didn't make the list, he got really boring really fast. the only time i was happy with that character is when Angelus came out to play!!
Ok, i would have loved to see Willow on there, buti agree about Spike #1. The thing about the actor who played Spike was that everyone gave better performances when one on one with him. I could have lived with the endless shirtless Spike beatings, however. After 7 years, i was glad to get away from Buffy. Joss had written her so grim. Marsters complained about having to bleach his hair for 7 years...but can you imagine having to play Lorne in that makeup daily? Imagine the plugged pores and hours in the chair.
Willow!
YESS, Spike is the best character ever! He's handsome, funny, sexy, witty and far from boring. Yeah, I'm glad that Angel didn't make the list and I disagree with some opinions that he is like Angel. No, Spike is totally different than him. He is better than Angel. He is a real champion - he earned his soul in a fight, and then he sacrificed his life for the woman who loved and saved the world. Spike is more worthy of Buffy than Angel. SPIKE AND BUFFY FOREVER!!!
soooooo glad that Lorne is on here. I just watched Angel and Buffy through, and as a newcomer to the shows, I was damn afraid that no one seemed to take any note of him at all :D
5. Simon (cause everyhing he did was heroic) 4. Tara 3. River 2. Mal 1. Willow. I didn't realise how much i liked the Simon character until i really looked at him. He does come off kind of boring at first but I love his character now. Willow #1 Forever!!
Ughh...Lorne? Really? Why are these all from Angel? Spike's #1 for sure, but if we're talking character, as in how well a character is written, a character's arc over time, that character's credibility, its weaknesses, strengths...this list is lacking. Jayne Cobb? He's mostly just a punchline...I'd say that there's a serious lack of Malcolm Reynolds and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (tragic hero much?) on this list. Why Jayne? Why? And Fred? She was cute, but if we're going with Amy Acker, we've got to go with Dr. Saunders.
please, angel doesn't deserve it. I mean, did anyone listen to the failure of an 'irish' accent?
Giles and angel, way before lorne and fred
1.Anya (it surprises me how so many people overlook her, she brought so much depth to a character that was mainly brought on the show to be 'comic relief' after Cordy left) 2.Spike (so much depth as a character) 3.Wesley (the tragic hero) 4.Wash (not only an amazing character in the whedonverse, but a terrific actor as well) 4.Oz (I'm really surprised not to see him on most lists) 5.Mal (one of the best 'leaders' in all the whedonverse, he really held his team in high esteem and ALWAYS treated them like family)
Angel should've been in the Top 5.
1. Mal, 2. Jayne, 3. Zoe, 4. Wash, 5. Kaylee
Too many characters for too small a list, but if Anya/Anyanka isn't on the list, then the whole list is bogus. She and Buffy are the two most complex characters that Mr. Whedon has ever created. Spike is the most compelling. Both Giles and Xander have betrayed Buffy on more than one occasion, hence no love for them from me.
Jayne, Mal, Kaylee,Wash, River,Inara, Zoe, Simon, Book, Saffron, Badger, Niska, Crow.....Did I leave anyone out?
I don't know if anyone's already pointed this out, as I'm not about to read 5+ pages of comments. But it needs to be said that Spike is HARDLY the only character to cross over from BtVS to Angel. Firstly, there was (Duh) Angel, then Cordelia Chase, then Wesley Wyndam-Price. Any Whedon Fan woth his/her salt knows that. Jeeeeez...
1- Spike, 2- Willow, 3- Cordelia, 4- Wesley, 5- Anya, that's mine, but I also love Giles, Andrew, Lorne, Drusilla, Angel, Johnathan, Dr. Horrible, River, Simon, all of them, lol.
Spike is definately right to be number one. Brought in to be a throw away bad guy , he just about made the series his own towards the end. Fred and Lorne bugged me. Would rather see Anya, Wesley or even Andrew on there!
To me Spike is the best character ever on TV, not just Whedon shows. James Marsters can do anything, I have laughed with him and more often cried. Anyone that listens to audio books should pick up The Dresden Files that James reads. He does not just read them he acts them out with voices and accents and makes a movie run in my head. AWESOME actor.
5. Kaylee 4. Giles 3. Wash 2. Fred 1. Lorne
5)Inara 4) Wesley (in Angel) 3) Mal 2)Glory 1) Willow - But tomorrow the list coud be quite different, apart from no. 1!
1. Wesley
5.River Tam 4.Mal 3.Angel 2.Dr. Saunders 1.Westley
1 Mal Reynolds
5. Willow 4.Giles 3.lorne 2. Buffy 1. Spike Spike
No Wyndam-Pryce? You look at Wesley's entire story arc from season three of Buffy to the series finale of Angel, it's the broadest evolution of a character I've ever seen. He started out as a comical bafoon, evolved into an assertive, confident leader, but fell into being a tragic, tortured, and hardened soul. He lost the woman he loved, and was never going to get her back. She died in his arms, and he died in her's. It was a picture perfect journey for this character, and should be listed as number one.
Buffy, Spike, Cordelia, Angel, Wesley.
I think you are making a mistake by not putting Xander Harris on this list. Xander is the everyman, in every way, but manages to be more of a hero than anyone else on the show, simply by *never giving up*. Not a slayer, not a vampire, not witch, watcher, or werewolf, not good with a gun, not uber-smart, just a good man with a brave heart.
Fred? Nah, had she not died, you wouldn't notice her. :P No important storyline, she was just there .
5. Gunn 4. Connor 3. Spike 2. Mal 1. Buffy While I've sometimes felt that Whedon's crew recycled character types, there are a few that are iconic or just plain cool. I've really gotta throw my props to Buffy Summers here. I know some people found her irritating at times, but the reason she was such an incredible character was because she was flawed. Had she not made mistakes, no one could've related to her as a hero. Furthermore, no one could've gone through what she went through without emotional damage. The important thing was that she always did the right thing in the end. I find it odd that people forgave her friends/enemies for hypocrisy, murder, betrayal, even rape, and Buffy was condemned for the very human (and common) act of sleeping with someone she didn't love while searching for a connection.
I totally agree!!! SPIKE is the best character not only in the Whedonverse! He is my most favorite character tv-character and I'm a big fan of Buffy and Angel shows mostly because of him! I think Spike needs his own spin-off show!!! It would be great!!!
1. Spike
Drusilla...worthy of a mention.
if only dollhouse was included. my list would be something like topher, xander, wes, buffy, spike...and Captain Hammer. (And these are not the hammer...the hammer is my penis.)
What, no Mal?
