Inspired by the life story of medium Allison Dubois, Medium stars the Emmy-nominated Patricia Arquette as a wife and mother of three who is trying to understand her natural intuition about people and her ability to communicate with the dead.
While her husband Joe (Jake Weber) is as supportive and as loving as he can be, the couple is struggling to find a balance between her family life and Allison's powerful calling. At work, Allison is hired by district attorney Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) to use her avilities to help him solve crimes.
Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette)
Allison has always been aware of her 'gift' but spent most of her life trying to ignore it or drown it out through alcohol. When she started to intern at the District Attorney's office, she knew it would be a challenge to hold down a job whilst maintaining her role as a dedicated wife and mother of three little girls, but it was her ability to see what was going on between the lines that lead her to the conclusion that she would never be able to be the objective lawyer she had dreamed of. DA Devalos saw massive potential in Allison though and offered her the chance to be a freelance jury consultant, amongst other things, in his office where she currently works. She now accepts and harnesses her gift, using it to help solve crimes, but she still struggles balancing her work and home life, as well as shunning the stigma and criticism her gift brings with it.
Joe Dubois (Jake Weber)
Joe Dubois is the devoted husband to Allison and father to their three little girls. He works as an aerospace engineer, but unlike Allison, he is able to leave his work at the door. Joe's life is spent supporting his family, and trying to remind Allison where work should end and family priorities take over. Joe is very accepting of Allison's gift, but only if it doesn't affect their little girls and the way the family live their lives. Joe is keen to keep Allison's gift under wraps wherever possible.
Ariel Dubois (Sofia Vassilieva)
As Allison and Joe's oldest daughter, Ariel feels the pressure of school and the constant nagging from her little sisters. She is a sensitive girl who has started to show signs that she too could have her mother's gift. As much as she understands what her dreams and visions mean for her, she is often confused about their exact meaning and relies on her parents for advice and love.
Bridgette Dubois (Maria Lark)
Bridgette is the middle daughter of Joe and Allison, and is very brave and curious. She has also started to show signs that she has inherited the gift, but as a young 1st grader, she does not understand why her friends cannot be seen, and where they go to when they eventually find peace. It's a very delicate operation for Allison and Joe to try and explain things in a language which Bridgette will understand.
District Attorney Devalos (Miguel Sandoval)
DA Devalos is a successful and shrewd lawyer who - although he fails to understand Allison's gift - always gives her his full support and loyalty. Devalos has also seen many occasions now where Allison's gift has benefited him too, as she makes the ideal jury consultant. He does however, have to be very careful how much he lets people know about Allison's work, as the temptation is to lie under oath rather than face the legal blackhole of whether Medium visions can pass as permissible evidence in a court of law. Devalos is a very patient man who often has to calm Allison at the end of the phone at 3am and reassure her that helping him catch criminals is the right thing for her to do.
Detective Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt)
Lee Scanlon is a fiery-tempered, cynical police officer who shudders at the thought of any psychic mumbo-jumbo. However, his good pal DA Devalos introduced him to Allison when he failed to solve the case of his sister's murder on his own. Scanlon is a man who believes in truth and science and evidence, and he too struggles to understand how Allison's dreams can be so accurate.
